      Maps & local

      • Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence includes links, review count and rating. You cannot pay for a better local ranking. Google Business Profile Help
      • Top Map Pack factors in 2026: primary category, proximity, keywords in the business name, address in the city, and being open at the time of search (new at #5). Whitespark 2026
      • For local normal results, on-page signals lead: a dedicated page per service, city keywords, title tags and quality links. Whitespark 2026
      • Adding keywords or cities to the business name breaks the guidelines and can get the profile suspended. Zonic

      Spam & reviews

      • Named spam policies include link spam (bought links), scaled content abuse (mass AI pages), site reputation abuse, expired domain abuse, doorways, cloaking and keyword stuffing. Google Search Central
      • Google ran spam updates on 24 March, 24 June, 18 August and 24 September 2026; the September one may take two weeks. The policies now cover AI Overviews and AI Mode. PPC Land
      • Since April 2026 Google’s review policy explicitly bans review gating, quotas, incentives and pressure on the premises. Penalties run from removal to a public warning and suspension. Launchcodex
      • Manual actions are lifted through a reconsideration request after the problem is fixed. Google Search Central

      Clicks, speed & AI

      • With an AI Overview on the page, position 1 gets about 9.7% of clicks instead of 20% on desktop (July 2026). Advanced Web Ranking
      • In AI search, mentions on trusted sites matter more than ever: “mentions are the new link.” Whitespark 2026
      • Core Web Vitals pass at LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, CLS under 0.1. web.dev
      • Google ran broad core updates in March and May 2026. They reward helpful pages, not quick fixes. Search Engine Roundtable

The game turns this research into ranking weights, delays and penalty risks. Numbers are simplified for teaching; real rankings also depend on the searcher’s location, history and device.
